We take our proposals to open up Parque del Mar to the planning department

Meeting between Parque del Mar neighbourhood representatives and city planning officials

Proposals to open up Parque del Mar

We met council planning officials to discuss the future of the railway land in Benalúa, walking routes to Parque del Mar and temporary solutions that could open the park to nearby neighbourhoods.

The meeting followed the residents’ demonstration on Thursday 11 June, when we once again called for the disused tracks to be removed, ADIF’s land to be cleared and safe routes into Parque del Mar to be provided. The council has undertaken to study our proposals and take them to ADIF during negotiations on the agreement.

Priorities for access, safety and a link to the coast

We have long argued that the tracks, the lack of proper crossings and the deterioration of the area cannot continue to cut Parque del Mar off. Safe walking routes are urgent if the park is to become part of everyday life in Alicante’s southern neighbourhoods.

We also discussed safety, visibility, cleaning and the regeneration of Alicante’s southern gateway. The meeting considered a possible green corridor along the Benalúa tracks connecting Casa Mediterráneo, Parque del Mar and the coast.

Progress that must lead to action

We welcome the fact that the council is listening to residents and discussing temporary solutions before the agreement with ADIF is concluded. We still want those commitments to lead to work on the ground, with a timetable, clear responsibilities and proper safeguards.

We will also need to follow the planning implications of the future agreement closely. For residents, the transformation must prioritise the public interest, green space, walking routes and neighbourhood quality of life, and avoid overdevelopment.
