MUDIGA

MUDIGA, Alicante Digital Museum

We want to put a proposal to Alicante City Council to restore the former Bufort and Cloquel flour mills, buildings of architectural value on the southern approach to Alicante. They would house the Alicante Digital Museum (MUDIGA), combining exhibitions and public education in three areas: the Digital Age, Digital Art and a gateway to leading virtual museums around the world.

We see several ways for people to engage with the museum. One area would focus on technology and science, with an emphasis on learning. Another would be devoted to new digital art, with exhibitions and space for visitors to take part and make digital art themselves. A further area could offer links to the world’s leading digitised museums, so that people in Alicante could take a virtual tour of the Louvre in Paris, the Prado in Madrid or MoMA in New York, among others.

We believe the proposed site is strategic and will become even more so. It sits at the head of the largest park in central Alicante, close to the main shopping district (Avenida de Maisonnave), the chosen site of the future Alicante convention centre and the cruise terminal. It is in the Digital District and on the city’s most international approach, the southern route from Alicante–Elche Airport, where the EUIPO and the Ciudad de la Luz complex are located.

MUDIGA could be as compelling a proposal as the Guggenheim once was for Bilbao, both for its novelty and its fit with the new economic model Alicante aims to develop. It could attract visitors, businesses and artists in the field, gain international attention and provide a significant boost to the southern approach, the city and the province. The museum could help the province attract more visitors and gain a higher profile in the international media.

We are seeking support from the city’s hotel and hospitality sectors, technology companies and public and private institutions. We have prepared a short presentation that explains the idea in more detail than this letter. We have also prepared a letter of support for the initiative, which we enclose with the presentation.

We hope the proposal interests you and that we can count on your support. Please send us a signed letter of support, either using the enclosed template or in your own words. With everyone’s help, we hope the project can become a reality soon.
