An agreement to remove the tracks beside Parque del Mar moves closer

Progress that must lead to an agreement

Transport Minister Óscar Puente told Radio Alicante that technical staff from Adif and Alicante City Council are studying a proposal to break the deadlock around Casa Mediterráneo and Parque del Mar.

In the interview, the minister said his department put forward a proposal for the area in 2023 and the city council has now sent a counterproposal. Puente said the technical teams are studying it and work can begin once there is agreement.

We welcome this progress with cautious hope. For years we have called for the Benalúa tracks to be removed so safe routes can open into Parque del Mar and the green space can expand and improve Alicante’s southern gateway.

A longstanding demand that cannot wait

On 25 June, ahead of the minister’s planned visit to Alicante, we asked that Parque del Mar also be part of the discussion. Parque Central is vital for the city, and removing the tracks by Casa Mediterráneo is just as vital for the southern neighbourhoods.

The difference is that Parque del Mar needs neither an enormously complex project nor unaffordable investment. It needs political will, coordination between authorities and a determination to resolve a situation that has dragged on for too many years.

We now ask for those statements to turn into action: a clear agreement between Adif and the city council, a firm timetable, safe pedestrian routes and the start of work to expand Parque del Mar.

What the media reported

Recent coverage confirms the discussion now extends beyond Parque Central. Radio Alicante reported the commitment to study the city’s counterproposal for Casa Mediterráneo and said the next day that the council had confirmed sending the agreement to reorganise the area. Alicante Plaza also placed the Benalúa tracks on the minister’s roadmap, and Diario de Alicante reported residents calling for clear dates and immediate improvements.

Our message remains the same. We welcome the progress, and the neighbourhood will feel its effects when barriers come down, routes open and disused tracks no longer cut Parque del Mar off.
