The former Murcia or Benalúa railway station, now home to Casa Mediterráneo, closed to rail traffic in 1974. The main station building, the train maintenance shed and the land occupied by the sidings and access track fell out of use. The track ran from the junction with the port line to the sidings beside the old station.
In 2012, Alicante City Council and ADIF signed an agreement to transfer part of this ADIF land to improve the southern approach to Alicante, with the intention of completing the transfer later. Nine years on, we still had not secured the land for the city to use as green space. Work to extend Parque del Mar was under way, with completion and public opening expected at the end of the summer. The park would remain inaccessible to most residents of neighbouring areas because the railway tracks blocked the planned entrances on the side facing the city. ADIF’s continued ownership of the tracks also held up major projects such as rerouting Avenida de Elche through port land and opening the fishing harbour to the southern neighbourhoods.
We are fed up and want a solution now. We are calling for two temporary pedestrian crossings to be put in immediately, one from Joan Fuster Park and the other near Calle Federico Mayo, as shown on the attached plan, so that residents can use this much-needed green space as soon as possible.
